Freelance finance missions
Freelance finance missions run from day-to-day accounting to interim CFO work. What is particular to the sector: the expert gets immediate access to sensitive data, and often works with an in-house team that did not ask for them. Trust is settled in the first few days.

What kinds of finance missions exist?
Five families structure the market, with very different seniority levels and durations.
Accounting and close. Reinforcement on a period close, catching up a backlog, covering a leave. Short missions, a constrained calendar, and little room to negotiate deadlines.
Management control. Building dashboards, budgets, margin analysis. Medium-length missions, often six months, where half the job is getting hold of data nobody wants to hand over.
Interim CFO. Replacing or reinforcing a finance director. Long, exposed missions, with a mandate that almost always includes unpopular decisions.
Consolidation and group reporting. A technical, standards-driven segment where rigour counts more than creativity.
Financing and fundraising. One-off missions, tightly bound to an external calendar, where the outcome depends partly on factors outside your control.
What day rate in finance?
The gap between the bottom and the top of the range is wider than in most sectors: a bookkeeping mission and an interim CFO mandate have nothing in common, yet both appear under "finance".
Our day-rate calculator reasons from your income target, your billable days and your actual charges, using the official French contribution rates checked against URSSAF's own libraries.
What companies are really looking for
Job ads list tools and standards. What decides whether a finance mission succeeds is almost always relational.
Discretion, ahead of every other quality. The expert sees the salaries, the real cash position, the unpaid invoices, sometimes the trouble. An indiscretion cannot be repaired, and companies know it when they hire.
Explaining a number to someone who does not like numbers. A management controller who produces an accurate table that the executive committee cannot read has not done half the job.
Working with a team that did not choose you. A freelancer arriving in finance is often read as an audit in disguise. Getting hold of data depends more on the relationship built in two weeks than on the authority of the mandate.
Holding a non-negotiable calendar. Period closes do not move. Reliability is worth more here than speed.
Why do finance missions fail?
Rarely on accounting technique. The Leadership IQ study attributes 89% of hiring failures to behaviour, against 11% to technical skill. In finance that imbalance is sharper still, because technical ability is verifiable on the way in whereas the relational dimension is not.
Three mismatches particular to the sector.
Access to information. An expert who demands data on the strength of the mandate gets passive resistance. One who builds the relationship first gets the files. Same skill, opposite outcome.
How you position yourself towards what already exists. Finding questionable practices is common. Flagging them bluntly closes every door; saying nothing betrays the mandate. The balance is behavioural, not technical.
The rhythm of peak periods. Closes create weeks of heavy load followed by troughs. An expert who organises their work linearly ends up struggling, with no fault in their competence.
Frequently asked questions
What day rate for a freelance finance mission?
The range is wide: a day-to-day accounting mission and an interim CFO mandate have nothing in common. Our day-rate calculator starts from your income target and your actual charges rather than from a sector average that represents very little.
Which finance missions are most in demand?
Management control and close reinforcement come up most regularly, because they answer cyclical needs. Interim CFO mandates are fewer but longer and better paid.
Do you need sector expertise for a finance mission?
Useful in heavily regulated sectors, secondary elsewhere. What weighs more is being able to get information out of teams that did not ask for your arrival, and to explain a number to people who are not financial.
